This coating reduces friction, which keeps the drill bit from heating up and eventually breaking. Because the coating reduces friction, it also increases drill speed. Some shank designs are more conducive to drilling through metal than others. Most shanks for this type of drill bit are either no-spin or hex. Researching shank design, bit material, and bit coatings can be confusing, but fortunately, drill-bit manufacturers make shopping relatively easy for the customer.

Here are a few additional tips that will help you drill smoother holes and keep your bits in tiptop shape. The best drill bits for metal should be made from steel intended for the metal you want to drill. Bits should also be durable and able to withstand the friction and heat produced when drilling through metal.

The following recommendations are all at the top of their class for metal drilling, and one or more may be an asset to your tool collection. The tapered noses and twisted side grooves of the bits in this Hymnorq set quickly penetrate many hard metals including iron to drill a steady, self-centering hole. The bits also work well for drilling softer metals, such as aluminum and copper. The downside is they are not suitable for drilling the hardest types of metal, including titanium and high-carbon steel.

Made from cobalt steel combined with molybdenum for added durability, the Hymnorq bits are friction and heat resistant. The bits come in a plastic case for easy storage. Beyond the drill and driver bits, the Ryobi kit comes with a number of other accessories that really round out the usefulness of the kit.

It has four depth stops, which are collars that can be locked on to a drill bit to set them to a specific drilling depth. When I installed a keyboard tray on the underside of a desk, these prevented me from drilling through the top of the desk. Most carpenters I know will simply wrap a piece of blue tape around the drill bit at the right depth and stop drilling when it makes contact with the wood, but using the depth stops is much more accurate, especially for anyone not used to using a drill.

Another excellent addition to the Ryobi is the countersink. This is a cone-shaped drill bit that carves out a recess so a screwhead can sit flush to the surface of the wood. For any visible screwheads, it makes for a very clean look. Even if the screw is going to be puttied and painted over, you can neatly recess the head with the countersink.

Compared with some of the other kits, the Ryobi is light on driver bits. It has a total of six 2-inch bits and 27 1-inch bits. In looking at Philips 2 bits the most commonly used , the kit has only three 1-inch bits and only one 2-inch bit. Like the Ryobi, it includes a large general-use bit selection and a separate set of brad point bits for detailed woodwork. The Hitachi has a slightly larger collection of masonry bits and a very extensive selection of driver bits.

The quality of the bits was equal between the brands. It also lacks some of the convenience accessories that we like so much in the Ryobi: the countersink, drill stops, and center punch.

We prefer the Ryobi for these reasons, but as an alternative, the Hitachi covers most of the same bases for about the same investment. The piece kit has the same basic selection of items as the larger kits, just in smaller amounts. Compared to our main pick, there is only one hole saw size instead of four and only one spade bit instead of four. There are only 20 1-inch driver bits, which is less than both the piece Ryobi kit and the Hitachi.

Spending a little more for the larger piece kit is usually worth it, but this one is also easily available at Home Depot at a very affordable price. Our picks have all been discontinued, so we are currently testing a number of promising drill bit sets as potential replacements. The Ryobi Piece Drill and Drive Kit is a comprehensive kit with a wide selection of drill and driver bits.

It also comes with a hole saw set and a countersink. The piece set is similar in selection to the Ryobi but typically costs more. The one-inch driver bits are stored along the perimeter of the case and are so difficult to remove that we needed to use pliers to get them out.

This same difficulty was seen with their piece kit as well. This extreme redundancy is reflected along nearly every bit size. This kit has a well-rounded selection of bits, although the selection is not as useful as the Ryobi. The case has jobsite durability, which is a plus, but getting drill bits and driver bits out is a tedious multi-step process.

The bits are separated out into small rubber holders that are each pressure-fit into the case. To get a bit, you have to first pry the rubber holder out of the case and then pull the needed bit out of the rubber holder.

To put it back, you need to do the opposite. The process gets old quick. None of them cater to the needs of the homeowner, and the sheer variety of the Ryobi kit makes it more desirable for general use.

The Makita is also at the high end of the price scale, likely with most of that investment going toward the large case. Milwaukee does not currently offer any comprehensive drilling and driving sets, instead separating them out to separate kits.
