Why do indians wear red dots

I experiment with colors and sizes and styles — it's all fun and a part of accessorizing. But when I wear a bindi outside of cultural safe spaces, it becomes a point of contention. Indians and non-Indians alike are confused by my choice. They're shocked when they find I wear it outside of spiritually-focused spaces. To work? With western clothes? And then there are non-Indians who stereotype me in other ways. I've been asked "Were you born with that? I see it as a teachable moment.

If they seem genuinely curious, then I take the time to explain. Instead of responding angrily, I consider their background and what religions, traditions, and cultures they've been exposed to. As long as they're respectful, I appreciate and welcome their questions.

When mass retailers started selling bindis and white women began wearing them at music festivals and parties, it made me upset at first. The bindi, especially a red-colored one, also serves as an auspicious sign of marriage. In some communities, women may stop donning a bindi after the passing away of their husbands.

Bindis now come in all shapes, sizes and colors, and are largely used as beauty accessories. This evokes the question of cultural appropriation, as many Hollywood celebrities Vanessa Hudgens, Gwen Stefani, Selena Gomez have began wearing the bindi as a fashion statement. While some individuals with traditional bindi-wearing cultures criticize this act, there are others who view it simply as an attempt to embrace Indian culture.
